Student Assignment
Student chooses a disease that interests her/him, and would like to further research. Using credible sources from the internet, student researches the disease by obtaining the following information about the disease: (1) What is the medical term for the disease? (2) What is the common name for the disease? (3)How widespread is the disease? (4) How many people are diagnosed with this disease each year? (5) What body system(s) does the disease affect? (6) What is the cause of the disease? (7)Is the disease genetics? (8)What are the symptoms of the disease? (9) At what age do symptoms develop? (10) How do the symptoms of the disease progress? (11)Can the disease be treated? (12) If yes, what is the treatment? If no, what are possible future treatment options? (13) How was the disease discovered? (14) Who discovered it? (15) Is there any historical significance about the disease? (16) What kind of research is being done to learn more about the disease? (17)Is there anything interesting or unique about this disease?
Learning Objectives
Students should know that: (a) Living organisms carry out life processes in order to survive; (b) Life processes can be disrupted by disease (intrinsic failures of the organ systems or by infection due to other organisms).
Student will be able to: (1) Explain the cause and the effect of disease on the human body; (2) Explain the cause and effect of diseases (e.g. AIDS, cancer, diabetes, hypertension) on the human body; (3) Relate some common diseases to the organisms that cause them; (4) Differentiate between infectious and noninfectious diseases; (5) Explain the role of antibiotics and vaccines in the treatment and prevention of diseases; (6) Explain the role of antibiotics and vaccines in the treatment and prevention of diseases.
Common Core Standards
CC9-10WH/SS/S/TS2 Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.
CC9-10WH/SS/S/TS2a Introduce a topic and organize ideas, concepts, and information to make important connections and distinctions; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., figures, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
Description of Infectious Disease Project
Student will develop a plan to research a disease that affects individuals in the United States, or other part of the world, which disrupts the ability of the human body to maintain homeostasis. Student will design an “awareness poster or brochure” that includes the information he/she researched about the disease. Student should incorporate pictures, figures, tables and/or graphs. Student has the freedom to put the project together however he/she wants, but it should be ORGANIZED, CONTENT-RICH and PLEASING TO LOOK AT.
